AROUND THE HOUSE

Appliances

A&D appliances in Medfield will take care of you. They have been in business for many years and are local, ethical people. It is also a nice way to support local merchants rather than the big box stores. - CS 08/07

Re: appliances - Lambco, 34 Wall St., Attleboro 508-226-1150, has always beat the competition. Usually, I review web sites, Consumer Reports, etc. , to narrow down the potential choices. Then, research (on-line if possible or via phone), the different prices and delivery options. Lambco has been our choice for the last 10 years. - CR 08/07

While they may not be the most inexpensive in the area, A&D Appliance in Medfield has a great selection, very knowledgeable staff, timely delivery and set-up. We outfitted our new kitchen (4 years ago) entirely at A&D. Ask for Mark. - TK 08/07

We found A&D Appliances in Medfield to be very competitive, knowledgeable and accommodating to meet our complicated delivery schedule. Great service as well. We asked the same question a year ago, so if you search the Norfolknet archives from Feb. and March 2006, you will find a thread on appliance shopping and lots of ideas were offered. - AL 08/07

Driveways/Masonry/Outdoor work

I used A-1 paving out of Wrentham (508) 384-7314. They have been around many years and do very good work. As for how much, it depends on many things such as the length of your driveway, the condition of the current driveway etc etc. - SB 08/07

Bay State Stone and Landscape in Norfolk - John Aplin(owner) 781-727-9155....He did our front steps, walkway and stone walls in both our front and backyard. The men who work for him are polite, courteous, respectful(says my wife), and above all, the stone work they do is amazing. - SM 07/07

As a customer for multiple services, I highly endorse Bruce Simpson. He's in town and very reliable. - LL 06/07

I ordered some (stone) two years ago from BASIC in Norwood they had by far the best price at the time. PB 06/07

A-1 Paving did our original home fifteen years ago, and then an addition to our current home's driveway, eight years ago. They did excellent prep work (to prevent settling, and cracks), which I am not sure all these companies do, and their price was competitive. You might want to get a quote from A-1. They are on Rt. 1 south in Wrentham, near Lucianos. - EC 05/07

Have nothing but praise for Bevilacqua Paving. They were about $1800 less than two other quotes and did an amazing job. They are one of the largest in New England. PB 05/07

I have used Rob Cain for plowing, re-grading , digging, etc and he has always been fantastic, prompt and fairly priced. - HNC 05/07

I used Rob from Norway Farms for drainage and foundation work on our home renovation. It was a great experience. He was honest and did things on time!! I would highly recommend his services. I think he also does snow plowing and irrigation work… - JPRW 05/07

I could look at your driveway. My name is Rob Cain from Norway Farms, Medway Street. I will also be available to do small tree and shrub pruning and pressure washing. I have a small dump truck, backhoe and loader for driveway work or small excavating jobs, pulling stumps, installing drainage, etc. References available. Rob 508-560-8899. 04/07

Please call John Peterson Masonry at 508-346-3677 (home) or 774-571-0357 (cell). John is my nephew and he does all of my masonery work He just completed a beautiful stone wall using large and small rocks. He also did patio work and sidewalks for me. He is very reliable and a great worker. - MG 04/07

Re: stone wall/walkway/steps: We used E. A. Simpson here in Norfolk for our front steps and are very happy with the quality of work. The price was similar to other quotes we received. The crew was professional and very careful of our yard during the work. The job was completed in a reasonable amount of time, also. GA

Electrician

For an electrician you could try Tom Petze. His number is 781-690-1717. - LP 08/07

In response to RS looking for a good electrician--- I recently used Robert Davis from Franklin. He was professional, courteous, neat and reasonable. I am having him back again to do more work. My neighbor had recommended him to me, and I am certainly happy to pass his name along. His phone number is 508-541-6182 - EF 06/07

n regards to the electrician: Jennifer Sweet Electric is the one I would use, she is excellent and moderately priced. Phone 508-533-0728. - JW 06/07

Need an electrician, try calling Pat Hazlett 508-400-0780 - PC

Re: an electrician to do work in your bathroom. I highly recommend Dennis Caissie. He has done quite a bit of work on our house and he is very reliable and reasonable. You can reach him at 774-244-7488. - CC

Energy

We recently switched to biofuel from www.massenergy.com. They offer two blends: 1) a 10% soybean/90% low sulfur heating oil or 2) a 20% soybean/80% regular sulfur heating oil. No changes are needed to your heating system - just make the switch and the new delivery mixes with what's in your tank. Soybean oil has about the same BTU value, but higher blends require system modifications.

There are many advantages (environmental, heating system, US farmers) for using one of these blends. It's a new opportunity to truly reduce your direct emissions. The actual distributor is MassBioFuel, www.massbiofuel.com, a subsidiary of Fisher Churchill, a 150 year-old heating company in Dedham. Signing up through Mass Energy helps this consortium invest and research in other alternative energy sources. The cost per gallon is higher than you a most likely paying now, but it comes down to values.

Aside from that, the next best thing you can do is switch out as many light bulbs with compact fluorescent. Garage, basement, hallways, kids bedrooms (especially), bathrooms, and kitchen are great candidates. Some of the newer bulbs now have softer yellow glow. We saw a significant reduction this year in KWH used from the same periods last year. - RG 03/07

Gardening/Landscaping/Lawncare

I would call Tree Tech in Foxboro they provide full service tree care. RC 05/07

Just wanted to give "two thumbs up" for a Norfolknet business listing - The Lawn King (508-954-6658). We had Andy in for a spring cleaning, edging and mulching of flower beds. Prompt, courteous service, fair price and excellent results. Would highly recommend. - KB 05/07

If you are still looking for a someone to do stump grinding, Rich Watson in Norfolk does it. He has done about 5 stumps in our yard. Great Job. He's right on Rte. 115 after Cliff's Cylces. His number: 508-528-7824. - SC 05/07

Best landscaper around is Peter Ferrara at Oak Knoll landscaping -- I've tried three different companies, and there's no comparison. It's a Norfolk business is that is important to you. He is at--oakknoll@comcast.net - RJM 05/07

Try calling Paul McKechnie regarding your patio and landscape plan. He is the brother of a friend and does some beautiful work. His website is: www.mckechnieinc.com. - EC 04/07

For landscaping design and work, I would definitely recommend Mark Ahronian out of Holliston. We had him in for some landscaping suggestions, and he came back with 3 or 4 hand drawn, color layouts and sat with us one evening to share his ideas. His crew did a great job with our project. May be a bit more expensive, but for a big job done right, it's worth it. - KB

Norfolk County Lawn provides mowing, fertilizing, mulching and all other aspects of property maintenance. You can reach us at 781-603-7172 or mowing@comcast.net. Thanks - MG

General Contractor/Renovations

A contractor we recommend is Distinctive Creations in Wrentham who recently completed a project at our home. Charlie Fruci, the owner, worked with us to define lots of details before the work began and included those in the contract. Charlie was very accommodating and made sure the work was done as planned, on time, and at a reasonable cost. A pleasant, honest professional we would use again without hesitation. Distinctive Creations' phone number is 508-384-7023. - JS 06/07

We recently used Mike Cavallarho of MC Designs Inc. He is a certified kitchen and bath designer and is absolutely wonderful. I would be happy to talk to you more about him - I have passed on his name to 2 other families who have gone with him and were very happy. His phone number is 508.695.2155. BD 06/07

In response to your post for renovating your bathroom, I would highly recommend Terry J. Dexter Custom Building. Extremely professional and fair. You may reach him at 978-500-2212. Terry just completed work on our home and we are very happy with the results. Good Luck. - LR

Handyman

No Job Too Small - Interior / Exterior Painting & Handyman Services, Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Landscaping, Home & Pet Sitting... Chickspainting@aol.com - SD (posted by business)

Rob Abramson is the best in Norfolk. His wife owns Something Special in the center of town. - BM 06/07

Thank you to all of the Norfolk residents who took the time and called me for work in and around there homes. I am a very detailed carpenter who does decks, cabinets, bathrooms, lattice, shelves, mantels with the extra finish. My prices are fair and I do my best to beat anyone's price. Thanks Again Tom at 508-517-4708. Local references as well. - TD

Handyman Carpentry does jobs big and small. From bathrooms and kitchens to trim work and painting. Our truck is all around town. We are local and have plenty of references. Give Scott a call at 508-272-1050. - MP

If anyone is looking for a reliable and honest handyman, call Scott Heine. Scott and his crew just finished up at our house and we couldn't be happier. Scott started work a day or two after I called him, finished all of our inside jobs within a day, then worked on our exterior for another day or so. His Norfolk-based business is called Handyman Carpentry and his number is 508-272-1050. - KP

Hardwood Floors

We've used Derry's Hardwood Floors several times and were always satisfied. They have a good reputation in the area. - GA 07/07

I highly recommend Hosking Hardwood at hoskinghardwood.com. When we first moved to Norfolk we used them to purchase Mirage flooring. At the time, Jeff worked out of his home just over the Norfolk/Walpole line. I did the work myself, and Jeff was extremely helpful in providing me with instruction, demo, equipment, and other personal touches that only a small local business would offer. If you want someone to install, I think he may be expensive, but he is top-notch, as he is the flooring expert on This Old House. Support the little guy! - RG

I haven't used them yet, but check out Hosking Hardwood at hoskinghardwood.com. They are an Internet flooring supplier but are out of Walpole! Their prices were very low, sometimes $2 a foot cheaper than at Flooring America for the laminate I was looking at. They also appeared on This Old House as flooring consultants. - LK

We have used Lumber Liquidators and found the quality comparable if not better than any other company we have used in the past. Due to my son's allergies and asthma we have had to put hardwood everywhere and have used a couple companies that I would not recommend. Countryside Flooring was awful - both in service, installation and pricing. I found that their prices varied from sales clerk to sales clerk (similar to purchasing a car). The installation was done wrong and awful to say the least; when trying to rectify the situation the customer service was horrific. Flooring America we never had the opportunity to use due to the fact that they never showed up to two appointments - I allowed the first for human error but the second time I felt was a serious reflection on how the company was run, so I opted to look elsewhere. I ended up at Lumber Liquidators and was completely satisfied with the quality of all the different types of wood we installed. Good Luck! - LMB

I used Tom's hardwood flooring. I called several vendors and they were by far the best priced and they did an amazing job. I know 3 other people who have used them and they all say the same thing. They can be reached at (617) 472-1291. - EB

Would like to recommend National Lumber in Mansfield (near the Depot - right side; stay right after passing depot - after you cut left off 106). They supplied me a bannister, stained it for me, carried it to the car etc. Great people. - JO

Heating and Cooling

Give Kermit B Schulz & Sons a call. Their number is 508-376-5545. I think they are terrific and have used them since we moved here 9 years ago. - BS

I got bids from many companies when we installed our A/C about 7 years ago. Went with All-Temp in Milford (508-478-0088) . Found them to be prompt, knowledgeable, and professional throughout the entire process. They also impressed me with how they strategized the load on our two zone system - several companies just used square footage, these folks factored in the sun from sliders and the 'heat rises' impact on both the the 1st and 2nd floors. Good luck! - CI

Re: airconditioning: We used Lane Refrigeration in Walpole (781-762-6226) and they were fantastic.Highly recommended. - TEM

Kermit Schulz in Millis is an excellent AC company. Excellent employees, great service, etc. 508-376-5545. Good luck. - BS

House Cleaning

I use K.D. Cleaning for my office, but I know he does homes as well. He is local and a does a great job at reasonable rates! His info is posted on Norfolknet in the business section. He is a member of the Norfolk Business Association and a nice guy. He will be the one that actually does the work, which I think is a big plus. K.D. Cleaning Co. Norfolk // Kevin at 508-528-0929 Owner is the Cleaner. Weekly, Bi-Weekly. Dust Management. - SFM 07/07

Movers

We just moved to town from Foxboro and used Humboldt Moving. They were wonderful! We used the Go Mini option (it's an affordable Pod, so to speak) and found that it saved us roughly 50% on the move. The gentlemen that showed up at my house were speedy, efficient, and wonderfully courteous. I would recommend them to anyone. - POH 08/07

We used Gentle Giant Movers for 2 of our local moves. Their quote might be a little higher than others, but they are extremely professional, courteous, hardworking, and thorough. I have heard horror stories of other movers not wrapping things properly or working slowly so they can charge for more hours, or just being creepy- and I would never take the chance of working with any other movers in the future. Gentle Giant took the stress out of moving day for me. That's worth a lot! - JT 08/07

Odds and Ends

For installation of a weathervane/cupola, try Bill Vincent from Walpole // 508-668-5514 - PMP 09/07

Painters

Recently I needed to have the interior of my nursery school painted and had a very short window of opportunity to get it done. I found Chick's Painting advertised here on Norfolknet and decided to give them a try. After meeting with the owner at my school I was confident that she had the knowledge and skill to get the job done. I hired them and I have to say that I was thrilled with the completed project. They finished the job quickly and the walls look beautiful. They also did more than what was asked in terms of wall prep and repair and thouroughly cleaned up after themselves.I would highly recommend them for any painting/odd job large or small! - SG 08/07

I also have had indoor painting work done by Bob Shea this year and am very happy with the results. He's very neat, clean, and even patched some of the holes that I had in the bathroom prior to painting. I highly recommend him. - CR 05/07

Re: a painter in Norfolk: John Marland, 508-528-7681, last painted our house a few years ago, and he was very reasonably priced. The job was done competently. He doesn't usually advertise, but goes by word of mouth. I plan to use him the next time we paint. - EC

I am a painter here in Norfolk with lots of references. I would be glad to give you an estimate. chickspainting@aol.com - SD

Pest Control

With regard to help with bee & wasp nests or any pest control problems, call us, APC Pest & Termite Control, Inc. in Medfield at 508-359-7563. - EMG 09/07

Ant problem???...We are having the same issue. We used APC out of Medfield. They are wonderful and they took care of the ants. They have a 6 month warranty...we had to have them come back and it was not an issue at all ....We also use them for termites! This must be a bad year for ants. We don't usually have as much of an issue - MW 08/07

I too have recommended Keady pest control from Norwood in the past when people have called in regarding issues with pests, rodents, etc. They have been very reasonable towards the people who have contracted for their services and the owner is very reliable and friendly. - HC 05/07

I highly recommend Keady Pest Control in Norwood. We have been using them for years and the same technician, Rick, comes every year, its so nice to see a familiar face in these times of employee turnovers. 05/07

Regarding a pest control company, we have used D&T pest control for several years - they have always been polite, professional, always call you back and honest!! I would highly recommend them 508 359-1000 or 508 966-4470. A family-owned company - LW 05/07

We use F&W Pest Control and have for years. They did find a nest once and since then we do quarterly visits where they spray outside and check inside for problems. You'll find them in the Yellow Pages. I believe they have an office in Wrentham. - VT 05/07

Try Eco Systems. I have used them several times. Generally, I've only had to call them out every 2 years. Phone number is 508-520-3737. - BS 05/07

I recently used Keady Pest Control of Walpole to treat our perimeter for the prevention of termites, etc. They came highly recommended from a realtor who has worked with them for years, and they were very thorough and professional. I would trust them to be honest and work with you. Their number is 508-668-0070. JT 05/07

Plumbing

I just wanted to say thank you to the members of Norfolknet who in the past recommended Heavey Plumbing from Walpole. We had a problem with our hot water heater and they had someone at the house within a half-hour after we called, and within another half-hour the problem was fixed. They were polite, professional and very reasonably priced. Thanks.- JZ 06/07

Plumber - Anthony Julian - Norfolk Resident - 781-603-6169. Anthony has done a great deal of work for us. He's honest, knowledgeable and reliable.

Have used Heavey Plumbing from Walpole for the last 30 years. Reliabe Fair pricing and on time. What more can I say ? - PB

Phoenix Plumbing (from Norfolk) was here yesterday - they are wonderful! prompt, polite, reasonable-priced, I can't say enough good things about them... the last time they were at my house was eight years ago and I had all the same great things to same about them. - CMK

I recommend Heavey Plumbing also. I've used them many times and have been completely satisfied. - MP

Pools

ClearWater Contruction Pools- Steve Turk!!! Has done many pools Norfolk, Millis, Medfield, Newton etc. He is listed in the phone book. He will come out and give you ideas and estimate. - KTD 08/07

We just put an inground pool in this year and used Environmental Pools out of Chelmsford- they were great - I don't have any complaints - they were there when they said they would be and the pool turned out beautifully! - BD 08/07

Call Clearwater Pools. They are from Millis but service just about anywhere. They can give you referrals as well. - KD 06/07

For all my pool needs I have always visited the folks at Easton Pool and Spa in Walpole. They should be able to put you in touch with someone to help you. I have had excellent luck with them in the past. Good luck! - BA 06/07

Roofing

I would recommend Weatherproof Construction in Norfolk for roofing, and installation of gutters and downspouts. They did a great job! - MO 08/07

I'd like to share my very positive experience with Essary & Company Roofing. They stripped and reshingled the house and shed in one day, cleaned up the yard and gardens meticulously and were fairly priced. Dan Essary and his crew worked together like clockwork, were a pleasure to interact with, and did a very professional job. I highly recommend them. Their office in Medway can be reached at 508-533-5040. - JS 06/07

Dave Smith (in Norfolk) does a great job with his crews roofing. He did our house two years back and we have not had a problem with it at all. He was quick, cleaned up and was priced fairly. - HNC 05/07

Septic Systems

Another septic service you can check out is All Seasons of Walpole, operated by Kevin Orlando whose parents own Linda's Variety by the Norfolk train station. We've enjoyed them for the past 11 years, his service is friendly and convenient, knows where to dig, and we don't even have to be home. My last pumping bill was for $195 in Oct 2006. Their number is 508-668-1911. You might even be able to pick up a business card at Linda's Variety. - RL 09/07

We use ST5 Septic in Wrentham 508-384-7322. They are locally owned by a husband/wife team. And they do a good job at reasonable prices. BS 09/07

Try Jason Hockman of Hockman Excavating, Inc. We’ve been happy with them for a number of years. (508) 660-6644 (Walpole) - TK 09/07

For septic troubles, I would highly recommend Callow Septic Services in Medfield. You can reach them at 508-359-4941. - EMG 09/07

I highly recommend Parker Sanitation out of Wrentham. He's one of the few independent contractors left out there. I'm not a big fan of Wind River. They are probably ok if you just want your system pumped, but I have heard stories of them suggesting costly repairs that were not necessary. - HF 06/07

I used Wind River Environmental septic service. They are based out of Walpole, I think. Fair pricing, on time for the appointment, and very professional. - JT 06/07

Trash Removal/Recycling

I agree. I have used Dover trucking for a couple years and they are great! LK 06/07

We recommend Dover Trucking. They are very professional, reliable and dependable. - WC 06/07

As a customer of Dover Trucking, I highly recommend them. We have had nothing but excellent service at what we consider a very fair price. - EAG 06/07

Upholstery

here was an article in the Boston Globe recently spotlighting the Norfolk Prison Upholstery Shop. I don't know of anyone using them but it looks promising. Here is the link: http://www.boston. com/yourlife/home/articles/2005/04/14/prison_rehab/ - SM 06/07

You might want to try Classic Furniture Services (90 Hayward St. in Franklin Ph: 508-528-6747; www.classic-furniture.com). They've been in business for many years. We used them for a set of dining room chairs and they did a very good job. However, you might want to have a seat when they give you their estimate. It won't be cheap! Apparently, no matter who you use, your love for that old chair is going to cost you. - TEM 06/07

I highly recommend Dave of "A Cover Up" for slipcovers. You can find the ad and phone number in the Country Gazette classifieds. He does an amazing job, his price is more than reasonable and the turnaround time is quick. He can also get you a discount on fabric. - JT

Windows/Doors/Garage Doors

Wanted to put in a plug for Steve from Pioneer Garage Doors in Walpole (508-668-8136). He was great, came out when he said he would, did the job really well and was very nice, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. The previous owner of my house had jury-rigged the door so that while it worked, it wasn't done right. Steve fixed it and installed a new opener, making sure that it was working perfectly before he left. Thinking about all the shoddy workmanship these days I think it's important to acknowledge someone who does his job so well and takes such pride in it. - RG 08/07

We second KB's recommendation of Steve at Pioneer Doors. The doors he helped us choose and installed are much more energy efficient and QUIET compared to the ones installed by the builder - and his prices were cheaper with installation than the local home improvement stores. He didn't like the way the gasket fit against the cement floor (it was warped during shipping - to be honest, I never would have known if he hadn't pointed it out) so he ordered a replacement and came back a few days later to fix it. For honest, quality work- give them a call. - PB 07/07

Someone on Norfolknet recommended Pioneer Garage Door Co, and we used them and they were very good. Steve came out to take a look, made some recommendations, installed with improvement over old doors, and the price was very resonable. Steve & Liz can be reached at 508-668-8136. - KB 07/07

You could try Patriot Window Cleaning in Walpole. They've done a fantastic job for us in the past. - JC 05/07

Window cleaners #401-710-9797. great window cleaning service. I've used them often and they are fast and prices are reasonable. - CR 05/07

I had about half the windows in my house replaced by Joe Stoller, the Door Doctor. He works out of Franklin. This is his own business which he runs on a part-time basis, which mean he works around his full-time job in construction. So he may spend an early evening or two, or both weekend days installing the windows, but he does a great job, cleans up after, and was very reasonably priced. He also did my neighbor's house and they were pleased as well. His number is 508-520-2097. - BD

Pioneer Doors in Walpole. We did the research, checked prices and they were significantly less than anyone else with the exact garage door that many installers use. Steve has the ability to get many styles and makers, not just the typical "Home Depot" brands. Steve Barrows, Pioneer Garage Door Co., (508) 668-8136, pioneerdoors@comcast.net - AB

I recommend Jolicoeur Overhead Doors. They are located on Pulaski Blvd. in Bellingham. Very nice to work with, quick, clean, honest and reasonably priced. They have been recommended on this board before. I don't think you can go wrong. - MJD

CARS ETC.

Bicycles Plus Franklin family run great people great prices I've bought many a bike from there. http://www.bicyclesplusfranklin.com/ - JMD 08/07

For all Volvo repairs I would highly recommend Dalzell Brothers Inc, 508-543-4700. They are located on Route 1, Foxboro, across from the State Police at the intersection of Rt. #140 and Rt. #1 (the south end of Rt. #115). We have bought 2 "gently used" cars from them and also have a 1991 240 that they repair. They know Volvos and have Volvo trained mechanics. They are reasonably priced, quick getting the work done, and polite. This is also a great place to get very clean used cars with no car salesmanship attitude. Many of their cars are still under the factory warranty. - RC

Millis Foreign Car Repair specializes in Volvos, VW, Toyota, Jaguar, etc. It's at 943 Main St., right on the corner of Exchange St. 508-376-4277, ask for Scotty (owner). No nonsense and reasonable. - SO

I would highly recommend Medfield Tire & Battery, Inc. Doug Blake and family are Norfolk residents for over 15 years. Doug is an expert in his field. He is an independent dealer which means he can get whatever brand fits your needs. He works on cars, light trucks, trailers, lawn mowers, and snow blowers. He does wheel restoration, snow tires, performance tires and tire repairs. He is hard working and honest. If you haven't checked him out you are doing yourself disservice. He is located at 15 Park St. in Medfield. His phone is 508-359-6093. - LB, Medfield Tire and Battery

Re: Medfield Tire & Battery, we have used Doug's business for over 10 years. He is knowledgeable, honest and hard working. Very customer-service oriented, too. We wouldn't go anywhere else for tires! - EC

PERSONAL SERVICES

Airport Transportation

Magic Carpet Limo in Mansfield great service anytime of the day or night with competitive rates. - JMD 06/07

We once went to Logan via the commuter line right from Norfolk. It worked great - when you get to South Station, you walk through the station to the front, get on the Silver Line (which is a bus) and off you go, directly to Logan. It stops at every terminal. Very convenient and cheap!! Not bad at all, but not like a limo, I'm sure(though I've never had that pleasure). Happy traveling. - JHR

I don't know if this would work for you, but the cheapest way to get to Logan is the commuter rail to South Station then the Silver Line bus, which stops at all the terminals. I did this last month and it worked out great. It was very easy and the total cost was less than $10. - MP

I believe Peter Pan/Bonanza bus runs a shuttle to Logan that stops at a Foxboro plaza off of Rt. 140, close to the 95 exit. You buy your ticket at one of the convenience stores in the plaza. I'm sure it's cheaper than a car service. You can probably get more info and schedules at the Peter Pan/Bonanza website. - GA

PCI tel# 888 515 5512 in Foxboro . House pickup and back to Logan $80/couple. We have had excellent service. They do PVD also. - RC

You could give Shackley's a call--they are in Medfield, Dominic's in Franklin or Able Limo at 508-435-3903. Sorry, I don't have the other numbers at hand but you can easily Google them. Dominic's recently gave me the lowest price. None of them are what I would call cheap. Another alternative is Logan Express from either Braintree or Framingham. Happy traveling. - BS

Catering/Food/Restaurants

The Asian market on Rt. 1 has Indian specialties. The nearest Southeast Asian market with a decent selection I've found is in on Arnold St. in Woonsocket, RI. Basil, lemongrass, galangal, everything you need for Thai cooking. - JC 06/07

Ann's Lunch is a staple in Westwood. Don't be deterred by the outside appearance, if you are looking for a good cheap standard breakfast this is the place. Also, another Norwood suggestion for buttery toast and eggs is Mug N Muffin right on 1A in the center. - TC 06/07

Regarding the breakfast places, Rick's in Franklin is owned by Rick Moore, who owned the Cliquot in Millis. He just moved the business and renamed it. Expanded menu, but same type of fare. I haven't been there for breakfast, yet, just dinner. Happy Eating! JM 06/07

Eggs & buttered toast. I like Nicky's (Wrentham) too. I love places where the waitress calls you "sweetie" or "hon" - signals experience to me. I've never been to Cracker Barrel (Wrentham), Rick's (Franklin), Budabings (Millis), Galante (Medway) or Murph's (Norwood), but I will. Thank you for those suggestions. I have been to Bristol Square Cafe (Walpole) and yes, they are good. I've also enjoyed James' Roadside Cafe (Wrentham), which is also good, but a bit of a wait. I've never had to wait at Bourque's (Norfolk), which makes great coffee. I used to love the Cliquot Grille (Millis), but they moved somewhere. - SO 06/07

Breakfast: Murph's Place in Norwood, Sunday can be somewhat of a wait but the line usually moves quick. -TC 06/07

Re: Breakfast--My vote is for Nicky's in Wrentham - GM 06/07

Re: Breakfast - My vote is for Budabings on 109 in Millis! - CI 06/07

Re: breakfast places - our vote is for the Bristol Square Cafe on Route 1A in Walpole (1428 Main Street) - TEM 06/07

We love Galante in Medway, it's on Village Street. Great breakfast and cheap compared to IHOP et al. The crowd outside on a Sunday morning can be deceiving, the wait is not usually loing. You can use credit cards to pay you bill but NOT for tips. I love their sausage omelet! Enjoy -NJD 06/07

The Big Y in Walpole has some great cakes and they are very reasonably priced! We had an incredible pirate ship one for my son's birthday last year. I know that they also have a Thomas the Tank Engine one which is adorable. Not sure about Curious George, but they have a large book that you can look through! - MB

Custom Cakes in Medfield also makes character cakes. They made us a Curious George one last year that turned out really well. They didn't have it in their book, but I just brought in a picture and they were able to copy exactly what I wanted. - NH

Try the Pastry Box in Plainville, just past the intersection of Routes 152 and 106, at (508) 695-5094. Their cakes and pastries are delicious, and I believe they do character cakes.- VR

Roche Brothers does character cakes. Have fun. - BS

Small catering jobs available for the spring season. We will come to your house or hall. Available for parties beginning in May. E-mail us now at dtcatering@yahoo.com. Will serve the local area and further. - DH

Computers

I've used Scott, redsox59@gmail.com, for computer services. He was fantastic. He broke down my old computer and set up my new computer. He was trustworthy and efficient. I highly recommend him. - JLH

and

My son Scott (an 18 year old at KP) is very good with computers and has done work for many neighbors. He charges $20 per hour, but only if he resolves your problem, and only for full hours. He could replace a hard drive in minutes, but depending on what else you need (an OS reloaded, or files moved, etc.) it might be longer. Feel free to email him at redsox59@gmail.com or call our home at 508-528-4399. - KM

Re computer repair: There is a place in Walpole Center, right next to the Paddock restaurant, upstairs in the old building. I think its called the Computer Doctor. I took my laptop there for a keyboard replacement and it was under $100.00. And it only took 2 days. They had to order the part. - PT

Re: computer repair: have you tried calling Geek Squad? I believe they are part of Best Buy. Good Luck. - JP

Ear Piercing

My daughter got her ears pierced on her 6th bday, she's now 9 and we've had no problems. We went to Clares at the Natick Mall. I wanted both ears pierced at the same time, so we had to go to their store on the first floor called Icing. I recommend having both ears pierced at the same time; requires two employees. They were great with her. Good luck! - CLC 06/07

My 5-year-old had hers done at Cindi's Jewelers in Foxboro. They were fantastic. We were there buying a charm for her bracelet as her bday gift and she asked the salesperson if she could get pierced ears too. So she did. I recommend them. - JLH 06/07

We went to Libby Lu, in the Natick mall. They were very good about giving us instructions on ear piercing, how to clean the ears, etc. You leave with some kind of congratulations certificate and hopefully you can get out of the store without buying your 6 yr old a gift—it’s right up their alley! That was 7 months ago and we have had no problems at all. AL 06/07

Nail Salons

A while back someone asked if anyone has tried the nail salon in town. (Star Nails on Main St.) I don't believe anyone responded so I finally decided to try it out myself and thought I'd share that I found it very clean and was very satisfied with the end results. For comparison, I normally go to the Grettacole in Boston and I have now decided to save myself money and go to the place in town. The people who work there seemed very nice and were very friendly. Check it out! - EAG 07/07

I've been going to Natural Nails in Medfield since it opened. Happy with the cleanliness, quality of work, and prices. CI 06/07

If you live on the Medfield side of Norfolk, Natural Nail, on 34 Park St. in Medfield is a reasonably priced salon, where you can get a good mani/pedi. - EC 06/07

Phone Service

Our Middle Schooler has a T-Mobile Pay-as-you-go phone. Reception is quite good - gets a better signal in our house than my Verizon phone. Looked at several pre-paid plans, liked this one due to cost per minute, and there are no monthly service fees at all. Comes in handy! - CI 05/07

Photography

I own Hughes Photography; I have a studio in Dover center and when the flowers come back we will have beautiful grounds to photograph on right here in Norfolk. The studio # is 508-785-9814; the web site is hughesphotography.com - DV

My friend in Bellingham started a photography business about 7 years ago. She's great and cheap - in comparison to the big guys. She is *fantastic* with kids. I recommended her to an aquaintence in Dec. to do a large family shoot and I heard back from from both people that they were thrilled with the results. The best part is that you get all the negatives and then make your own copies! You don't have to pay professional printing costs and you don't have to deal with copy right issues. Give her a email to discuss rates and details. Meredithalbrightphotography.com. - LM

I am a Norfolk resident and photographer with very competitive (ie: low) rates. You can review my gallery at my website www.jingothecat.com. Tailoring

The little white house in franklin is great for alterations; it is located on Union Street - CFC 06/07 [Note: I called, and learned that it is no longer in operation due to illness. - MW 3/30/09]x

Since you live in Norfolk anyway try Carol's (in the same parking lot as the old Linda's variety) I promise you, you won't be disappointed. Her prices are reasonable, she does an EXCELLENT job, and you will love her. I promise you she will be the one you will return to for many years for all of your alterations. DH 06/07

I have been using Dona's Tailoring on Cottage St in Franklin for the last 7 yrs. She is located across from the Rome's parking lot. She has altered everything from my business suits to casual attire. Also, she altered all of my bridesmaid's dresses and did an outstanding job for a very reasonable price. Her phone # is 528-0837. - TD

CHILDCARE/EDUCATION

It's not in town but we loved Medfield Children's Center on South Street at the corner of 109. Our second child just graduated from there and is more than ready for Kindergarten. The staff is wonderful and most have been there for a long time. The school starts at 15 mos and goes to pre-k. and I believe is open fromn 7-5:30 Robin is the director and is wonderfully flexible. For the past 5 years I was able to pick my hours, and add some on days when I needed to and you pay by the hour. The number there is 508 359 4239. - NJD 08/07

The BEST preschool is the Norfolk Children's School if you ask me. We had two absolutely wonderful years there. I don't know if they have openings but it is worth looking into. ALL of the teachers there are very smart and very loving. My daughter LOVED it and now cannot wait for Kindergarten because of her great school experience at NCS. (It is on Union Street on the left just past the second cirlce if you are leaving town.) - JEC 08/07

Re: Karate classes: We have been extremely happy with Villari's of Franklin. Very supportive staff and a great bunch of kids. They are just over the line if you go down Main Street - between Acorn Animal Hospital & Adirondack Club. They usually have a low-cost deal for a 30 day trial. webpage: http://villarionline.readyhosting.com/Franklin/contact.asp CI 07/07

Regarding a College Coach, I highly recommend Christa Panciocco at CollegeBound (508-660-6216 or collegeboundservices@comcast.net). She is a former colleague, student affairs professional and does some excellent work with students. I think you'll find her services outstanding. Meanwhile, if your high school or college student is looking for assistance in writing a resume and finding a job or internship, I am happy to help! You can reach me at keldred@careersinthemaking.com. - KE 06/07

Re: College coaches - My daughter had a wonderful experience with Cheryl Barad of Norfolk. You can reach her at gobridges@aol.com. NS 06/07

Check out "Skid School" held throughout the year at various locations in Eastern Massachusetts. Click here for info: http://www.skidschool.org My grandson gets his permit this Fall and I'll be sending him to Skid School to learn skills above and beyond the usual driving school teachings. - RP 06/07

If you are looking for Beginner Piano Lessons, I would be happy to speak with you. I am a performing and recording songwriter/singer as well as vocal and piano coach. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy as well as a paid four lesson commitment. If you are close by and have a tuned piano, I would be happy to teach you or your child in your home. Thanks. Rubytunes@aol.com - PRR 04/07

To JM who is looking for a camp for her daughter, my daughter has enjoyed time in camps at the Adirondack Club in Franklin and the Hale Day camp in Westwood.

Hale Day camp has a bus that goes there from Medfield. The only problem is that I am not sure you can go just 2 days/week. Most run a full week and charge that way regardless of how often you use it. But perhaps I am mistaken. Good luck in your search. - JBN

Yashah Reid Mango of Lucky Ducky Daycare on Union Street has been providing our daughters with afterschool care a few afternoons a week and we have been thrilled with their care. I know she has a couple of little ones on a part-time basis and that she has openings as one of her babies recently moved. She provides great healthy meals, fun projects, music etc. and her rates are reasonable. - NS

Re: an Algebra II tutor. Hilda Douglas (508-528-9762) has tutored my 3 children over the last seven years. She has been very helpful to us, and is an excellent resource. My second child is now a senior in high school, and was never a "math" person, yet she has found success due Hilda's help. - EC

I run a playgroup for working parents in Norfolk and Franklin called the Saturday Club. If you have any questions about working parent issues in the area, feel free to email me at workingparentsnorfolk@hotmail.com. - KD

Give Matthew Johnson a call at 508-528-4458. He tutored my daughter almost every week during sixth grade. He was awesome and gave her the confidence and tricks she needed. She has slight dyslexia and was becoming math phobic. Now she is an A student in math and loves it. I'm sure he can also tutor freshman math. He is an engineer and was also trained as a math teacher. - BS

LEGAL SERVICES

Re: Elder Law Attorney. I used Daniel W. Nye. 50 North St. Suite 200, in Medfield. 508-359-5410. He was recommended to me by another lawyer and was very knowledgeable about the current elder law and and estate plannning. - RH 08/07

Another good local elder law attorney is Ryan Swartz of Borchers Ware & Guglielmo, 77 Main Street (Route 109) Medway, 508-803-1900. PN 08/07

Anthony Visonti is an excellent attorney and specializes in Elder Law. His office is just off of Rt. 128. - De Vito & Visconti, 20 Eastbrook Rd # 304, Dedham, MA 02026, (781) 326-1818 JPB 08/07

MIND AND BODY

Medical

Pediatric Associates of Medfield/Weston. Dr Nicholas Pacella. He is the best. Flexible hours, weekends and evening hours. My three children ages 6,6,1 have been with him for 6 years. They are on 109, near Medfield center. Very attentive, very pro-active. Not like some physicians who are very "re-active". The kind of doctor you want to be caring for your sick child. I am very picky and he has been wonderful. 508-359-9200 - KS 08/07

Check out Walpole Pediatrics on Main Street/1A - 508-668-2200. Our children go there and we like them. Friendly, good response for emergencies and Saturday hours for same day illness calls. - LP 08/07

Re: Children's speech pathologist - Children’s Therapy Associates (in Natick) http://www.childrenstherapyassociates.com/ One of the partners lives here in Norfolk. They have an excellent reputation. Good luck! - SR 06/07

There is a fantastic chiropractor at Pallis Chiropractic in Norwood, MA. www.pallischiro.com - KAB

I have used Pediatric Associates (Norwood office) for nearly 15 yrs and although they go through secretaries and nurses, they are all very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. My 14 1/2 yr. old son started out as an infant with Dr. Friedman, was switched to Dr. Braitman and I wouldn't and don't allow him or any of my boys to see anyone else. I can always get an appointment whether it be a sick visit, routine check up or time for sports physicals. I find Dr. Braitman/Pediatric Associates very knowledgeable in the recent trends in medicine and the growing needs of adolescents. He's very safety conscious as well, always asking them when it comes to head/brain safety if they are careful and protecting themselves. Pediatric associates is a wonderful practice and I wouldn't take my boys anywhere else. - RD

Re: a male doctor with Pediatric Associates - I too have known the practice for going on 20 years, and am extremely satisfied with them. My 16-year old son started out as a baby with Dr. Friedman(he's wonderful), but for the past few years has been seen by Dr. Kolodny. I think he is very thorough, thoughtful, and direct. My son is totally comfortable seeing any of the doctors, or nurses. - EC

I will second the recommendation for Dr. Chris Giuliano at Pediatric Specialists of Foxboro and Wrentham. I agonized when switching from our pediatrician in Wellesley when we moved to town and now could not be happier. The whole practice is great. (Except for the phones... you might find a busy signal quite a bit on a Monday morning.) - KE

Regarding a pediatrician... we have been very happy with Westwood Pediatrics. They are located on 109 in Westwood. They have evening and weekend hours and everyone we have worked with there has been very knowledegable, caring, and prompt! Good luck! - MO

I use Pediatric Associates - they have offices in Franklin and Norwood and have weekend hours alternating between Norwood and an office in Wrentham. My children's pediatrician is certainly not a newby, but is always on top of the latest recommendations by the AAP for immunizations, allergy restrictions, etc., and is an incredible safety freak. My kids enjoy going to the doctor (unless it's for shots!) because the get great care from a friendly staff. - JM

For pediatrician, we've been happy with Pediatric Specialists on Rt 1 in Wrentham. A few years ago I was thinking of looking for a different practice, then Dr Kim and Dr Chris Giuliano joined the practice. Both are quite knowledgable and personable. Chris is the son of one of the founders of the practice. - CI

You could give Dedham Medical Associates a call--781-329-1400 (ask for pediatrics). They have locations in Dedham and Norwood with several pediatricians and very accessible urgent care on the weekends. You always see your own ped at this practice as long as it's regular hours. Most of the docs also have an association with Children's Hosp. You can check them out on line as they have a web site. - BS

Dental

To CMK: I must put a plug in for Norfolk County Dental, downtown, above Town Pizza. They have flexible hours, Dr. Iadarola is awesome (we don't see much of Dr. Kaiser), excellent hygenists, and the receptionists are incredibly personable and efficient. They also have Dr. Gamm, who is the orthodonist extraordinaire that treated all 3 of my kids. The practice epitomizes what we love about Norfolk--real people getting the job done in a friendly manner. -EC 05/07

We like Chestnut Dental in Franklin. We see Dr. Beard and she's great. The hygenists are warm and good with the kids and the practice does not charge the additional $95.00 "professional fee" charged by another popular dental practice. - MJD 05/07

We have been very happy with Mitch Pasenkoff in the center of town. He is great with our kids (8 and 10), his dental assistants explain everything, he has Saturday hours which has been very helpful to us, and they seem to take many different insurance plans. All good in our book. - AL 05/07

Chestnut Dental Associates in Franklin (Pond Street) are awesome. Their phone number is 508-520-6660. They are so good with the kids. My kids enjoy going. - BS

I cannot speak highly enough of Drs. Gulrich and Karasko. Although Dr. Gulrich has retired, Dr. Karasko has carried on the same kind of professional, highly skilled, and friendly care that he did. The office staff is absolutely wonderful. We have known the members of this superb practice for over 10 years. I don't think you could find any place better for orthodontics. - MP

We use Dr. Simi in Norwood (rt on 1A) for our kids orthodontics. He and his staff have been excellent.- DH

PETS

For a vet recommendation, I would suggest Main Street Veterinary Hospital, 825 Main St, Millis, (508)-376-9621. Nice new facilities, Drs. and staff, and the prices are fair. - CR 08/07

As far as vets go, I would recommend Norfolk County Vet on RT 1A in Walpole. http://www.norfolkvet.net/ - DMG 08/07

Try Missy at the Village Groomer on Rte 1 in Walpole. They have done many cats for the Animal Control Department. I highly recommend them. They have days which are set up strictly for cats (no dogs = less stress) and their prices are very reasonable. Hilary Cohen, Norfolk Animal Control 07/07

We highly recommend Carin Cohen of Critter Visits. Not only does she have a great rapport with our dog, she has also proven to be excellent with her human clients. She is responsive, reliable, and very experienced with training and handling dogs. Her website is www.crittervisits.com - JT 07/07

Catherine Flynn of AnimalWorks in Norfolk and her husband Ken have been helping to take care of our puppy since he was about 10 weeks old. Very reliable and great with our dog. They offer a variety of services - walking and pet sitting. Her # is (508) 528-1351. EH 07/07
